Local SEO and Google Business Profile

Local SEO for service-area businesses without a shopfront

Short answer

If you visit customers instead of having them visit you, set up your Google Business Profile as a service-area business: hide your street address, list the towns or areas you really cover, and keep everything else complete. Your profile can still appear on Maps for nearby searches. Strong reviews, clear service pages and accurate areas matter even more because you have no shop to be seen.

Who counts as a service-area business

Plumbers, electricians, pest control, home cleaning, AC repair, mobile car washing, tutors who go to students' homes, event decorators and photographers are typical examples. You may work from home, a van or a small godown that customers never visit. If customers do come to your address during opening hours, you are a storefront business, or a hybrid, and should show the address.

Setting up the profile correctly

  • Verify the profile with your real address, then choose not to show it publicly.
  • Add service areas as the cities, towns or localities you actually travel to.
  • Keep the area realistic. Google advises that service areas should not stretch beyond roughly two hours' drive from your base.
  • Use a phone number that you or your team answer while working.
  • Set hours for when you take calls or bookings.
  • Choose categories that describe the service, such as Electrician, not Home Services in general.

What not to do

  • Do not use a virtual office, a friend's shop or a post box as your address to look local somewhere else. Google treats this as a guideline breach.
  • Do not create several profiles for one business to cover more areas.
  • Do not add area names to your business name.

Being found without a map pin

Your hidden base still acts as the centre point, so you will usually show more easily for searches near home than in the far edge of your area. To widen your reach fairly, build signals that relate to the other areas: reviews from customers there that naturally mention the locality, posts about jobs done there (with the customer's permission), and website pages about the areas you serve with real, specific detail.

Photos of you at work, your van with branding and finished jobs help replace the shopfront photos that storefront businesses rely on.

Your website matters more

Without a shop, people judge you by your profile and website. Write one page per main service, explain how a visit works, what areas you cover, how you charge (in words, if prices vary), and how to book. Put your phone number and a call button at the top of every page on mobile.

Where AI Marketing Master helps

Once your profile is connected (which needs Google's API approval for the platform), the app checks profile completeness, drafts posts about recent work and suggests replies to each review for your approval. The AI website page writer can draft service and area pages from your approved details. Enquiries from your website or landing page form go into the CRM, with new-lead alerts to your phone so you can call back quickly while on a job.

What it does not do

  • Profile connection needs Google's API approval for the platform.
  • No local rank grid to show visibility across your service area.
  • The app alerts you about new leads but never messages leads automatically.

Questions people ask

Can I show my home address?

You can, but if customers do not visit you there, Google expects it hidden. Hiding it also protects your privacy.

Can I list a whole state as my service area?

Avoid that. List the areas you really serve and can reach in a reasonable time.

Will hiding my address hurt my visibility?

It does not count against you. Your hidden address is still used to understand where you are based.
