Short answer
For a "near me" search, Google uses the searcher's location, then shows businesses that are relevant, close and well known. You cannot rank for "near me" by adding those words to your website. What helps is an accurate Google Business Profile with the right category, a website that clearly states what you do and where, and genuine reviews that show you are active and trusted.
How Google reads "near me"
When someone types or says "dentist near me", Google replaces "near me" with the person's location from their phone or network. The search becomes, in effect, dentist in this neighbourhood. Then it looks for businesses that match the service and are close to that point.
This is why two people in different parts of the same city see different results for the same words. There is no single "near me" ranking to win.
The three things Google weighs
- Relevance: does your profile and website clearly say you offer this service? Categories, services lists and page content matter here.
- Distance: how far you are from the searcher. You cannot change this for a fixed shop, which is why being accurate about location and service area matters.
- Prominence: how well known you are, judged from reviews, mentions on other sites and your website's general standing.
Why stuffing "near me" fails
Pages titled Cake Shop Near Me Cheap or headings repeating near me in every line do not make you appear closer. They make the page read badly and look like it was written for robots. Google understands the location from the device, not from your page.
Instead, name the actual area: Fresh cakes in Sector 70, Mohali. That helps both people and Google.
What to work on, in order
- Profile basics: verified, correct category, address or service area, hours and phone.
- Services and description that use the words customers use, such as root canal treatment rather than only endodontics.
- A website page for each main service and each branch, mentioning the area naturally.
- A steady flow of honest reviews, with replies.
- Photos and regular posts that show the business is open and active.
- Correct hours, so you are not shown as closed when someone searches at 9pm.
"Open now" and voice searches
Many near-me searches include open now or come through voice assistants, often from people ready to visit. If your hours are wrong or missing, Google may leave you out. Keeping regular and holiday hours right is one of the simplest ways to stay in the running.
How the app supports this work
AI Marketing Master's profile completeness audit (after the Google Business Profile connection, which needs Google's API approval for the platform) shows gaps in your profile. The website audit checks page titles, headings and mobile basics. Posts and review replies are drafted for your approval. The app does not show a local rank grid, so it cannot tell you where you appear for a near-me search on each street; it focuses on the things you can actually improve.
What it does not do
- No local rank grid or near-me position tracking.
- Profile checks need Google's API approval for the platform.
Questions people ask
Should I put "near me" in my business name?
No. It breaks Google's naming rules and can get your profile suspended.
Why does my shop not appear when I search near me from home?
Google uses your current location. If you are far from the shop, closer businesses will usually show first.
Can paying for ads help with near-me searches?
Local ads can appear above the map results, but they are separate from the free listings and do not change your free position.
Does being open late help with near-me searches?
It can, simply because fewer businesses are open then. Only list late hours you really keep, and keep them correct on Google.
