Local SEO and Google Business Profile

Name, address and phone consistency (NAP)

Updated 21 Oct 2026 · Written and checked by the AI Marketing Master team, Shivah Web Tech

Short answer

NAP consistency means your business name, address and phone number are written the same way everywhere they appear: your Google Business Profile, website, social pages and directories. Matching details help Google trust that all these mentions are the same business, and stop customers calling an old number or walking to a closed branch. Fix the big places first.

What counts as NAP

N is your business name as customers know it and as it appears on your signboard. A is your full postal address, including unit number, building, street, area, city and PIN or postcode. P is the main phone number for that location. Many people now add W for website, because a wrong link is just as unhelpful.

Why mismatches cause trouble

  • Customers find an old number on a directory and cannot reach you.
  • Google sees two addresses for what might be one business and becomes less sure which is right.
  • Duplicate profiles appear, splitting your reviews between them.
  • After a move, the old address keeps sending people to an empty shop.

Small differences that matter and ones that do not

Google is good at understanding that Street and St. mean the same, or that a phone number with or without the country code is the same number. You do not need to chase every comma. What matters is real differences: an old address, a different phone, a former business name, a missing unit number in a large market or a branch listed at head-office details.

Pick one standard format and use it from now on, so new listings start right.

A one-afternoon NAP clean-up

  • Write your official name, address and phone in a note. This is your master version.
  • Check your Google Business Profile against it first.
  • Check your website footer, contact page and any location pages.
  • Check Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn and any marketplace or booking apps you use.
  • Search your business name and old phone number on Google to find other places that mention you.
  • Update what you control. For directories you do not control, use their edit or claim option.
  • Keep a list of where you are listed so the next change is quicker.

After you move or change number

Update Google and your website on the day of the change. Then update social pages and the directories that send you real customers. Keep the old phone number forwarding for a few months if possible. Do not create a new Google profile for the new address; edit the existing one so you keep your reviews.

What AI Marketing Master can and cannot do here

The app keeps your approved business details in one Business Profile, and the AI uses those details in every post, page and reply it drafts, so new content stays consistent. The website audit reads your site, and the Google profile completeness audit checks the profile once connected, which needs Google's API approval for the platform.

The app does not check or update third-party directories. It does not build citations or run citation audits, so directory listings are something you or a specialist handle by hand.

What it does not do

  • The app does not check, update or build directory citations.
  • Profile checks need Google's API approval for the platform.

Questions people ask

Should I use a toll-free number or a local number?

Use a local number for each location on Google where you can. You can still show a toll-free number elsewhere on your website.

Does every comma need to match?

No. Focus on real differences in name, address and phone. Minor formatting variations are normally understood.

Can I put keywords in my business name to help?

No. Use your real name. Adding keywords breaks Google's guidelines and can lead to suspension.
