SSL certificate expiry monitoring

Updated 21 Oct 2026 · Written and checked by the AI Marketing Master team, Shivah Web Tech

Short answer

SSL certificate expiry monitoring checks the certificate on your website and warns you before it runs out. When a certificate expires, browsers show a full-page security warning and most visitors leave. In AI Marketing Master, SSL expiry checks are an option the platform switches on; once active, the certificate shows as Healthy, Expiring soon or Expired, so a failed renewal does not go unnoticed.

Auto-renew is not the same as never failing

Most hosts renew certificates automatically, and most of the time that works. Renewals fail quietly when something around them changes: the domain's DNS was moved to a new provider, the site moved host, a firewall blocked the validation check, or a payment card on the hosting account expired. Certificate lifetimes across the industry are also getting shorter, which means renewals happen more often and there are more chances for one to fail.

The first person to notice is often a customer who messages to say your website looks hacked.

What an expired certificate costs you

  • Browsers show a red warning page before your site loads. Few people click past it.
  • Contact forms, bookings and payments stop working for anyone who does not click through.
  • Ads may keep sending paid clicks to a page people refuse to open.
  • Trust takes a hit even after you fix it.

How the check works in AI Marketing Master

  • The platform switches on uptime and SSL checks for your account. Until then the item shows grey as Not configured, never a pretend green.
  • The app reads your site's certificate from the outside, the same way a browser does, and notes the expiry date.
  • A certificate with plenty of time left shows green as Healthy.
  • As the date gets close, it turns amber as Expiring soon, which means it needs you.
  • If it has run out, it shows red as Expired.

What to do when it says Expiring soon

  • Log in to your hosting panel and look at the SSL or security section. Many panels have a "renew" or "reissue" button.
  • Check that your domain still points to this host. If DNS moved, automatic renewal cannot validate.
  • If you bought a paid certificate separately, check the renewal and payment with the seller.
  • Ask your host's support team if renewal keeps failing. This is their area and usually quick for them to fix.
  • Once renewed, the next check should show Healthy again.

Related HTTPS checks in the audit

Separately from expiry, the website audit flags pages still served over plain HTTP, so you can make sure every page uses HTTPS. Together these cover the two most common certificate problems small sites face: not having HTTPS everywhere, and losing it when a renewal fails.

Who should switch this on

Any business that takes enquiries, bookings or payments through its website, and every agency that looks after client sites. For agencies, one expired certificate on a client site is an awkward phone call; seeing Expiring soon a little earlier avoids it.

What it does not do

  • SSL expiry checks work only when the platform has switched the option on.
  • The app warns you; it cannot renew or install certificates.
  • It checks the certificate on the site address you added, not every subdomain or mail server.

Questions people ask

Is SSL monitoring included in every account?

It is an option the platform switches on. If it is not active for you yet, the app says Not configured rather than showing a result it has not checked.

Can the app renew my certificate?

No. Renewal happens at your host or certificate provider. The app tells you when renewal is needed so you can act in time.

Does it check subdomains too?

It checks the certificate on the website address you have added. Certificates on other subdomains or on mail servers are not covered by this check.

What is the difference between SSL and TLS?

TLS is the modern name for the technology. People still say SSL certificate out of habit. They mean the same thing here.
