Headings and the H1: structuring a page

Updated 21 Oct 2026 · Written and checked by the AI Marketing Master team, Shivah Web Tech

Short answer

Use one clear H1 that says what the page is about, then H2 headings for the main sections and H3 headings for points inside those sections. Headings should describe content, not be used just to make text big. Google can handle more than one H1, but a single clear H1 and a logical order help visitors, screen reader users and search engines understand the page quickly.

Headings are the page's table of contents

Most people scan before they read. They look at the headings to decide whether the page answers their question. Screen reader users jump from heading to heading to move around. Search engines and AI answer tools use headings to understand which part of the page answers which question. Good headings help all three.

The levels, in plain words

  • H1: the page's main topic. "Physiotherapy for back pain in Zirakpur".
  • H2: the main sections. "What we treat", "What happens at your first visit", "Fees and timings".
  • H3: points inside a section. Under "What we treat": "Slipped disc", "Sciatica", "Posture pain".
  • H4 and below: rarely needed on small business pages.

One H1 or several?

Google has said it copes fine with several H1 tags, so this is not a ranking emergency. Still, a single H1 that matches the page title in meaning is the clearest signal for everyone. Common causes of extra H1s are themes that wrap the logo in an H1 on every page and page builders that make every big line an H1.

Problems worth fixing

  • No H1 at all, often because the hero banner text is part of an image.
  • The H1 says only "Welcome" or the business name, not what the page offers.
  • Headings chosen for size or colour rather than meaning, such as an H4 for a footer note because it looked right.
  • Skipping levels for style, like H2 straight to H5.
  • The same heading text repeated on many pages.
  • Whole paragraphs set as headings.

Writing headings that answer questions

Turn the questions customers ask into H2 headings, then answer each one in the first sentence or two below it. "How long does a tooth implant take?" followed by a direct answer is easy for a person to scan and easy for an answer engine to quote. Keep headings short, specific and in the words your customers use, in English, Hindi or Punjabi as your audience prefers.

Checking headings with AI Marketing Master

The website audit checks the heading structure of every page it crawls and flags pages with no main heading or a muddled order. When you use the AI blog writer or page writer, you can ask for a clear main heading and question-style sections, and quality checks run before you approve the draft. Changing headings on existing pages is done in your website editor.

What it does not do

  • The audit flags heading problems, but AI Marketing Master does not edit headings on existing pages. WordPress auto-fix covers titles, meta descriptions and image alt text only.

Questions people ask

Should the H1 be the same as the page title?

They should mean the same thing, but they can be worded differently. The title is written for search results; the H1 is written for someone already on the page.

Do headings need keywords?

They should use the words customers use, which naturally includes your main topic. Forcing the same keyword into every heading reads badly.

Do headings help with AI answers?

They help any reader, human or machine, find the part of the page that answers a question. A heading that asks the question, followed by a short direct answer, is easy to quote. It does not ensure your page will be used in an answer.

Can I style a heading to look small?

Yes. Choose the heading level by meaning and change its size with CSS. Do not pick a lower level just to get smaller text.
