Setting up the Meta pixel on your website

Updated 21 Oct 2026 · Written and checked by the AI Marketing Master team, Shivah Web Tech

Short answer

The Meta pixel is a small piece of code on your website that tells Meta when visitors from your ads view a page, submit a form or buy. To set it up, create a pixel in Events Manager, add the base code to every page, add events for the actions that matter, test them, verify your domain, and ask visitors for consent where the law requires it.

What the pixel does and why ads need it

Without tracking, Meta only knows that someone clicked your ad. It does not know whether they booked, enquired or left. The pixel reports those website actions back, so you can see which ads lead to results and so Meta can show ads to people more likely to act.

It also lets you build audiences of past website visitors for retargeting, within Meta's rules.

Setup, step by step

  • Open Events Manager in your Meta business portfolio and create a new dataset for your website.
  • Choose how to install: many website builders and shop platforms have a built-in Meta connection, otherwise copy the base code.
  • Place the base code in the head section of every page, or use a tag manager to load it site-wide.
  • Add standard events for key actions, such as Lead after a form is sent, Contact after a call or chat click, and Purchase after an order.
  • Use the Test Events tool in Events Manager and visit your site to check each event arrives once.
  • Verify your website domain in the business portfolio so you control how events from it are used.

Choosing the right events

Track fewer, meaningful events rather than everything. For a service business, the thank-you page after a form is often the key moment. For a shop, add to cart and purchase matter. Name events consistently and fire them only when the action is complete, not when the button is first tapped.

Do not send personal or sensitive information in event details or page addresses, such as names, phone numbers or health conditions. Meta's business tools terms forbid this, and it can get your data restricted.

Consent and privacy

The pixel uses cookies and sends information about visitors to Meta. In many places, including the UK and the European Union, you need clear consent before loading it. India's data protection law also expects you to tell people what is collected and why. A simple cookie banner that loads the pixel only after a visitor agrees is the safe approach.

Update your privacy policy to say you use the Meta pixel, what it records and how people can opt out. If you are unsure about your legal duties, ask a qualified adviser.

Common problems

  • The pixel is installed twice, so every event counts double.
  • The thank-you page can be reached without filling the form, so Lead events are false.
  • Events fire on staging or test sites and mix with real data.
  • Ad blockers and browser privacy settings stop some events. This is normal; it is one reason businesses add the Conversions API.

Help from AI Marketing Master

The app gives step-by-step Meta pixel guidance, and Milo can answer questions as you go. You or your web developer add the code. If you use the built-in CRM, you can also switch on Conversions API lead sharing, which sends lead events with hashed contact details. It is off unless you choose it.

What it does not do

  • The app provides pixel guidance; it does not install code on your website.
  • Meta features in the app need Meta's app review for the platform.
  • This page is general information, not legal advice about consent.

Questions people ask

Is the Facebook pixel the same as the Meta pixel?

Yes. It was renamed when Facebook's parent company became Meta. The setup is the same.

Do I need a website to use the pixel?

Yes. The pixel runs on web pages. If your ads send people to WhatsApp or an instant form, you measure those results inside Meta instead.

Will the pixel slow my website?

It adds a small script. Loading it in the standard way usually has a minor effect, but check your page speed after installing.

Does the app install the pixel for me?

No. It guides you through the steps. The code is added by you, your developer or your website platform's Meta connection.
