Short answer
Facebook ads let a small business pay Meta to show a message to people chosen by place, age and interests, on Facebook and Instagram. Start with one clear goal, one offer, a small daily budget you can afford to lose while learning, a simple image and a way to measure enquiries. Expect to learn for a few weeks before judging whether ads are worth it.
Boosting a post or using Ads Manager
The Boost button takes a post you already shared and pays for more people to see it. It is quick and fine for an announcement, but it gives you fewer choices about the goal and placements.
Ads Manager is the full tool. You choose the campaign goal, build the audience, set the budget and schedule, and can run several versions of an ad side by side. Most businesses that advertise every month end up in Ads Manager, because it shows clearer numbers and gives more control.
The three layers of every campaign
- Campaign: the goal, such as awareness, traffic, engagement, leads or sales. Pick the one closest to what you actually want; Meta optimises for that goal.
- Ad set: who sees the ad, where, when and for how much. This is where location, age, placements and budget live.
- Ad: the image or video, the text, the headline and the button, such as Book now or Send message.
Choosing who sees your ad
For a local business, location matters more than anything else. Draw the area where customers can realistically reach you, and check whether Meta is targeting people who live there or also people just passing through.
Detailed interest targeting is less precise than it once was, and Meta often widens audiences automatically. A broad audience in the right area, with a clear image and offer, is often a reasonable starting point. If your ad relates to housing, jobs, credit or social issues, Meta's special ad category rules limit how you can target, so declare the category honestly.
Budget without guesswork
You can set a daily budget or a lifetime budget for a set period. Choose an amount you are comfortable spending as a learning cost, not one you need to earn back in the first week. Meta's delivery system needs some days and some results before it settles, so frequent edits tend to restart that learning.
No one can tell you in advance what a click or an enquiry will cost. It depends on your area, season, offer and how many others are advertising to the same people.
Creative that small businesses can make
- A clear photo of the real product, room, dish or result, taken in good daylight.
- One message per ad: the offer, the problem you solve, or the reason to visit now.
- Short text first, details after. Most people read only the first line.
- A button that matches the next step: call, WhatsApp, book or visit the website.
- Nothing you cannot back up. Meta rejects misleading claims, and customers remember them.
Knowing whether it worked
Decide before you start what counts as a result: a form, a call, a message or a sale. Install the Meta pixel on your website if ads send people there, and keep a simple note of where each enquiry came from. Judge ads on enquiries and customers, not likes.
Where AI Marketing Master fits
Milo can turn your goal into a campaign draft, write the ad text from your approved business facts and make ad images from your product photos. New campaigns are saved as paused drafts, and a person authorises launch within a budget cap. Reports then show spend, clicks, cost per lead and new leads in plain words.
What it does not do
- Meta Leads and Sales goal campaigns cannot be drafted from AI Marketing Master yet; you can create them in Ads Manager.
- The Meta connection needs Meta's app review for the platform.
Questions people ask
How much should a small business spend on Facebook ads?
Only what you can afford to treat as a learning cost for the first few weeks. There is no correct number for everyone; start small, measure enquiries, then decide.
Should I boost posts or use Ads Manager?
Boosting is fine for quick announcements. For regular advertising, Ads Manager gives more control over the goal, audience and measurement.
Do Facebook ads also show on Instagram?
They can. Meta runs both from one ad account, and you can choose automatic placements or pick them yourself.
Why was my ad rejected?
Usually because of a policy issue, such as a misleading claim, restricted product or personal attributes in the text. Read Meta's reason, fix it and request a review.
