Short answer
To improve Largest Contentful Paint, first find the LCP element, usually the hero image or main heading. Then speed up the slowest part: server response, the delay before the image starts loading, the download itself, or render-blocking CSS and scripts. A good LCP is 2.5 seconds or less for most visits; more than 4 seconds is poor.
Step one: know which element is being timed
LCP measures when the largest image, video poster or text block inside the first screen finishes appearing. On most small business sites it is the banner photo on the home page or the main product image. On text-heavy pages it can be the first paragraph.
PageSpeed Insights and Chrome DevTools both name the LCP element. Check the phone view, because the element can differ from the computer view.
The four parts that add up to LCP
Lab tools break LCP into these parts. Fix the biggest one first instead of guessing.
- Time to first byte: how long the server takes to start sending the page.
- Load delay: the gap between that first byte and the browser starting to fetch the LCP image.
- Load time: how long the image or font takes to download.
- Render delay: time spent waiting for CSS or scripts before the element can be drawn.
Fixes for a slow server
- Turn on page caching in your CMS or with your host.
- Use a content delivery network so files come from a location near the visitor.
- Remove plugins that run heavy database queries on every page.
- If you are on very cheap shared hosting and pages take more than a second to start, a better hosting plan may be the real fix.
Fixes for a late or heavy hero image
- Never lazy-load the LCP image. Lazy loading is for images further down the page.
- Put the image in the HTML as a normal img tag rather than a CSS background, so the browser finds it early.
- Add fetchpriority="high" to the hero image, or preload it.
- Serve it in a modern format such as WebP or AVIF, sized for the screen, with a smaller version for phones.
- Replace auto-playing sliders with one strong image. Sliders delay LCP and few visitors watch past the first slide.
Fixes for render-blocking files
Large stylesheets and scripts in the page head make the browser wait. Remove unused CSS, defer scripts that are not needed for the first screen, and load chat widgets, review carousels and tracking tags after the main content. If a web font is the LCP text, use font-display: swap so text shows straight away.
Checking your LCP in AI Marketing Master
The app shows LCP for phone and computer from Chrome UX Report field data where available and PageSpeed Insights lab data for any page, with a plain status word. Use it after each change to see whether the lab number moved, then watch field data over the following weeks. Milo can explain which of the four parts is slow in simple terms.
What it does not do
- AI Marketing Master measures LCP and explains likely causes. It does not compress images, change hosting or edit your theme code.
- Pages with few visitors may show lab data only.
Questions people ask
What is a good LCP time?
2.5 seconds or less for most visits is good. Between 2.5 and 4 seconds needs improvement. More than 4 seconds is poor.
Why is my LCP fine on computer but poor on phone?
Phones have slower processors and often slower networks, and phone layouts may use a different, larger image. Always test the phone view.
Will a caching plugin fix LCP?
It usually helps the server part. If the real delay is a heavy or late hero image, caching alone will not be enough.
How soon will Google see my improvement?
Lab tests show the change straight away. Field data covers the last 28 days, so it improves gradually over about a month.
