Short answer
Lead source attribution means recording which channel or campaign brought each enquiry, so you can spend more on what works. The basics are simple: tag your links with UTM parameters, keep the click ids that ad platforms add, record offline sources like walk-ins and phone calls by hand, and ask new customers how they heard of you. No method is perfect, so use it to compare, not to prove.
Three layers of attribution
Most small businesses only track the first layer, if that. Adding the second and third is what turns a lead count into a decision, such as stopping one offer and doubling another.
- The channel: website form, Meta lead ad, Google Ads lead form, WhatsApp, phone call, walk-in.
- The campaign: which offer, ad or post inside that channel, usually from UTM tags or the ad platform's campaign id.
- The page: which landing page or website page the person was on when they filled the form.
How to tag your links with UTM parameters
UTM parameters are short labels added to the end of a link. They do not change the page; they only tell your form and analytics where the visitor came from. Use them on every link you control: social posts, WhatsApp status links, email signatures, QR codes on flyers.
- utm_source: where the link was placed, such as instagram, whatsapp or flyer.
- utm_medium: the type, such as social, paid, qr or email.
- utm_campaign: the offer or season, such as diwali-offer or summer-batch.
- Keep the words lowercase and consistent. Instagram and instagram will show up as two sources.
- Write your naming rules down so everyone on the team tags links the same way.
First touch, last touch and why it gets messy
A customer may see your Instagram reel, search your name on Google a week later, and then fill a form. First-touch attribution credits Instagram. Last-touch credits Google. Both are partly right. Small businesses rarely have the data for complex models, and pretending otherwise leads to false confidence.
A practical approach is to record the source of each enquiry when it arrives, and separately ask customers what made them get in touch. When the two disagree, that is useful information, not an error.
Do not forget offline sources
In India especially, many enquiries come by phone call, a WhatsApp message to the shop number, or a visit after seeing a hoarding. If these are not logged, digital channels look more important than they are. Make it a habit to add these leads by hand with the right source, even if it takes ten seconds at the counter.
How AI Marketing Master records sources
Every lead has a source set when it arrives: website form, Meta lead ads, Google Ads, or, for leads added by hand, manual, WhatsApp, phone call, walk-in or other. Website forms also store any UTM tags, Google and Facebook click ids, the page and the referring site that the form passes. Google Ads lead form leads keep the campaign, ad group and form ids. Your monthly report counts leads by source and compares them with the month before.
Because leads can be moved to Won or Lost, you can compare sources by customers won, not only by enquiries. A source with fewer leads but more wins is often the better one to grow.
What it does not do
- Attribution only works when links are tagged and forms pass the tags through.
- The app records one source per lead record; it does not build multi-touch attribution models.
- Campaign details for offline leads depend on what your team types in.
Questions people ask
Do UTM tags affect my SEO?
No. Search engines handle tagged links fine, but do not add UTM tags to your own internal links between pages, as that muddles your analytics.
Why do some website leads have no campaign?
The visitor probably came from a link without tags, typed your address, or your form did not pass the tags through. Check that your form includes the hidden fields.
Can I see which Google search keyword brought a lead?
Only if you put it in a tag yourself, such as utm_term on an ad link. Google does not pass organic search keywords to forms.
Is source attribution the same as conversion tracking?
They are related. Attribution records the source on your lead. Conversion tracking tells the ad platform that a lead happened, so it can learn. AI Marketing Master supports both, separately.
