Short answer
A reel cover is the still image people see before they tap, on your profile grid and in some feeds. A good cover shows one clear subject, has a short title of three to six words in large letters, keeps that title in the centre so cropping does not cut it, and matches the style of your other covers. You set the cover in each platform's app; AI Marketing Master does not make covers automatically.
Where your cover actually shows up
On your profile, reels appear as a grid of small tiles. Those tiles are cropped from the full tall image, so the edges of your cover may not show. In some feeds and search results the video plays straight away and the cover matters less. On YouTube Shorts, people see a frame from the video in many places.
So the cover does two jobs: it helps people choose a reel from your profile, and it makes your profile look organised to someone visiting for the first time.
Picking a frame versus designing a cover
- A frame from the video is quick and always matches the content. Choose a moment where the subject is sharp and nobody is mid-blink.
- A designed cover takes more time but lets you add a clear title and keep a consistent look across your grid.
- Mixing both is fine. Many businesses design covers for tips and how-to reels, and use frames for quick moments.
What makes a cover readable on a small tile
- One subject, large in the frame: a face, a product, a finished dish.
- A title of three to six words, in a big, plain font. Thin or fancy fonts disappear at tile size.
- The title placed in the centre area, so the profile grid crop does not cut it.
- Strong contrast between the title and the background.
- The same font, colour and title position on every designed cover, so your grid feels like a set.
Cover ideas by reel type
- How-to reel: the finished result with the title 'How we make it'.
- Before and after: a split image with 'Before' and 'After' labels.
- Question answered: the question itself as the title, for example 'Is GST included?'.
- New stock: the product on a clean background with the word 'New'.
- Team moment: a clear face shot, used only with that person's consent.
Where AI Marketing Master helps, and where it does not
The reel editor makes the video only. It does not generate a cover or thumbnail, and it does not pick a frame for you. You choose or upload the cover in the platform's own app, where the platform allows it.
For designed covers, Creative Studio can make social graphics and clean product images using credits, and AI can suggest short title wording. The media library keeps your cover files with tags, so you can find and reuse a template. Remember that the cover still needs to be added on the platform side.
Common cover mistakes
- Long sentences that become unreadable at tile size.
- Titles near the top or bottom edge that get cropped on the grid.
- A cover that promises something the reel does not show.
- Using a stock photo or someone else's image without the right to use it.
What it does not do
- No automatic cover or thumbnail generation, and no automatic frame picking.
- Covers are set in the platform's app, not uploaded through the reel editor.
- Designed graphics in Creative Studio use credits.
Questions people ask
Does the reel editor create a cover image?
No. There is no automatic cover or thumbnail. You choose or upload the cover on the platform, and you can design a graphic in Creative Studio first.
What size should a reel cover be?
Use the same 9:16 shape as the reel, usually 1080 by 1920 pixels, and keep the title in the middle so grid crops do not cut it.
Can I change the cover after posting?
Some platforms allow it and some do not, and the options change. Check the post's edit menu in the platform app.
