Meta descriptions people want to click

Updated 21 Oct 2026 · Written and checked by the AI Marketing Master team, Shivah Web Tech

Short answer

A meta description is the short summary you write for a page, which search engines may show under your title in results. It does not directly change rankings, but a clear, specific description can persuade more searchers to choose your page. Write a unique one for each important page, describe exactly what the page offers, and keep it roughly within 150 to 160 characters so it is less likely to be cut off.

What a meta description does and does not do

Search engines use page content to decide rankings; the meta description is not a ranking signal in Google. Its job is to help a person scanning results decide that your page has what they want. Think of it as the line on a shop sign under the shop name.

Google often writes its own snippet from your page text instead, especially when the search is phrased differently from your description or when your description is missing, repeated or vague. That is normal and not an error.

What makes someone click

  • It answers the question in the search, or clearly promises to.
  • It names specifics: the service, the area, what is included.
  • It says what makes this page useful: a checklist, examples, opening hours, a step-by-step guide.
  • It matches the page. A description that oversells leads to quick exits and lost trust.
  • It reads like a sentence a person wrote, not a list of keywords.

Examples, weak and better

Service page, weak: Welcome to our salon. We offer the finest services at the finest prices. Contact us today. Better: Bridal makeup and hair in Kharar, with a trial session and home visits on the wedding day. See packages, photos of real brides and how to book.

Blog post, weak: Read our latest blog post about GST. Better: Got a GST notice for late filing? What the notice means, the documents to gather and when to ask a CA for help, explained for small traders.

Neither better version invents an offer. Both describe what the reader will find.

Length and format

Google has no fixed character limit, but it trims snippets to fit the screen. Around 150 to 160 characters on a computer is a common working range, and phone screens may show less. Put the most important words first so the meaning survives if the end is cut. Skip rows of symbols or emojis, and do not use the same description on many pages.

Which pages to fix first

  • Pages with many impressions but few clicks in Search Console.
  • Your main service pages and home page.
  • Pages with a missing or duplicated description, as found by an audit.
  • Seasonal pages before their busy period.

How AI Marketing Master helps

The website audit lists pages with missing or duplicated meta descriptions. AI can draft a title and description for each page, using only your approved facts, and the quality check confirms the description is present and within length. On WordPress, approved title and meta fixes can be applied for you and undone later if needed. With Search Console connected, you can watch the click-through rate for each page in the following weeks.

What it does not do

  • No one can control exactly which snippet Google shows.
  • Automatic applied fixes work on WordPress only; on other platforms you paste the approved text yourself.

Questions people ask

Should every page have a meta description?

Every important page should. For very large sites with thousands of similar pages, letting Google build snippets may be more practical, but small business sites can write them all.

Should I include my keyword?

Yes, if it fits naturally. Google often bolds words that match the search, which helps the description stand out.

Why is Google showing a different description?

Google chooses the snippet that most closely matches each search. It may use your page text instead. Make sure the opening of the page also summarises it well.

Can I include a price or offer?

Only if it is current and true. An offer that has ended but still shows in search will annoy customers.
